Marine fuel
Methanol is a safe, clean-burning, cost-effective, globally available marine fuel. It is available in over 120 ports worldwide and is among the lowest emission fuels for marine engines. Methanol complies with International Maritime Organization (IMO) 2020 regulations, supporting vessel owners and operators to reach IMO2030 and IMO2050 CO₂ reduction goals.
As a marine fuel, methanol virtually eliminates sulphur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter (PM), and reduces nitrogen oxides by up to 80% compared with Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO). Methanol is biodegradable in water, making it far less damaging than conventional marine fuels in the event of a spill. Methanol is also widely available at ports worldwide, as part of established infrastructure, and requires minimal adjustment to existing engine technologies.
Production of ‘green’ methanol from sustainable sources such as waste, bio-mass or renewable energy is also growing and highly scalable, and when used as a marine fuel reduces CO2 emissions by over 90% on a lifecycle basis, making methanol a future-proofed shipping fuel.
