Transportation fuel
Methanol is growing as a cleaner burning road transportation fuel globally, especially in countries such as China, where there is also a growing refuelling infrastructure. It is already included in fuel standards in multiple jurisdictions, both as a blend into gasoline or as 100% methanol fuel (M100).
Methanol-fuelled vehicles offer a much cleaner and more affordable solution that addresses the downsides of diesel engines, which emit particulate matter (soot) as well as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon dioxide emissions, and directly impact air quality, with associated health implications and costs affecting both residents and visitors.
Proman is advancing the use of methanol as a cleaner transportation fuel through ongoing pilot activities in Trinidad and Tobago, including work with local partners to demonstrate the viability of methanol‑fuelled trucks. These efforts aim to showcase methanol as a practical, lower‑emission alternative for heavy‑duty transport and to encourage wider uptake across the national haulage sector.
In parallel, Proman is engaging with the relevant authorities on the potential inclusion of a low‑percentage methanol–gasoline blend within Trinidad and Tobago’s fuel standards. Introducing such a blend could help reduce emissions, lower the country’s reliance on imported gasoline, and create new opportunities for supplying blended fuels within the region.
