Methanol

Methanol is an essential chemical, present in almost every aspect of our lives. It is also growing as a cleaner burning pathway fuel for the energy transition.

We are the world’s second largest methanol producer, with 7.2 million tonnes of installed capacity across eight plants. Methanol is at the core of our product portfolio and is rapidly emerging as one of the most versatile and scalable low-emission fuels available today.

Used across the chemicals sector for essential goods like textiles, packaging, construction materials and electronics, methanol is also powering a new generation of cleaner energy solutions. Demand is projected to reach 132 million tonnes by 2029, driven by its growing adoption in shipping, power generation, and transport.

As a liquid at ambient temperature, methanol is easy to store, safe to handle, and supported by a mature global supply chain. It produces almost zero sulphur oxides (SOx), significantly reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx), and generates lower carbon emissions compared to diesel or fuel oil. These benefits can be further enhanced with carbon capture and blending with green methanol, making it a futureproof solution.
